Waterborne illness appears to be on the rise - Outbreaks of waterborne disease are increasing in the United States, underscoring a need to monitor unregulated drinking water systems, federal health officials have said. Outbreaks of illnesses from drinking water were reported nationwide. About 74% of the latest outbreaks, which killed two people and sickened more than 2,060 others, came from ground water sources such as wells and springs.

This increase reflects problems with drinking water from small, independently owned wells. More Americans are drinking well water each year, with many likely using unregulated private wells where maintenance and testing are left up to individual owners.
